Get Your Gear In Shape!

Are Ski Lessons Right for You?

Whether you’re a seasoned downhiller or a first-timer, ski lessons can be beneficial. Skiers take lessons for more reasons than simply gaining technical proficiency. Learning from an instructor can also help you to feel safer on the slopes and have more fun by expanding your repertoire of skills.

Beginners should always take a few lessons to get a feel for the snow. Skiing can be intimidating for newcomers to the sport. There is a lot of equipment to purchase and a staggering variety to choose from; skiing jargon can be confusing, too. Instructors can help ease your transition into the sport. In addition, it’s important to understand the fundamentals of skiing so you don’t reinforce bad habits. If you take lessons, a qualified instructor can teach you the right techniques and share some pro tips so you can have a solid foundation.

Proficient skiers should not rule out lessons. If you feel yourself getting bored, or you want to advance to more difficult terrain, try another lesson. You’ll be developing new skills so you can venture on to more challenging trails.

Experienced skiers should also take a lesson when trying out new shaped skis for the first time. There are new ways to simplify moves and to clarify teaching on the new skis. While you might not need a lesson to learn how to ski the new gear, you will be more confident and successful in a matter of hours, not weeks.

Now that you’ve decided to take a lesson, it’s important to find a class and instructor that are right for you. Call ahead to the local area or destination resort to find out about beginner lessons and any special deals that might be available. Make sure you research the options at your local ski area to find a class for your age group and gender. Most people get more from the individualized attention of a private lesson than from a group lesson, but group lessons are cheaper.

Always request a fully certified instructor who can recognize and use different learning styles. Also, try to find an instructor or class suitable to your skill level and goals. Most importantly, remember to have fun!
